The Project That Started With an EV Charger
Last October, a facility manager asked us to quote a small solar array, battery backup, and an EV charger. I assumed the charger would be the easy part. It wasn't.
For context: I manage procurement for a 12-person electrical contractor. We spent about $840,000 on materials in 2024, and I track every order in a job-costing system. That system is the reason I write reviews. It shows where a quote was missing something long before the invoice does.
The client's notes included a link labeled “Edward Horton Jinko Solar.” It looked like a review, but it was a search-string dead end with no official source. That’s where the project started: chasing a half-labeled PDF instead of asking the right questions.
Review Jinko Solar Panels? Start With the Receiving Dock
JinkoSolar is often listed as a Tier 1 manufacturer in BloombergNEF’s bankability database (BloombergNEF, 2024), but I don’t treat that as a quality stamp. It’s a financing signal. What actually matters is the module at the receiving dock.
In 2024, we received about 1,128 Jinko modules across 14 deliveries, mostly 580W Tiger Neo N-type panels. Damage rate: three cracked cells on arrival. That’s 0.27%. One pallet showed up with scuffed edge protection, and the distributor issued a credit in about three weeks. Not ideal, but workable.
If you “review Jinko solar panels” online, you’ll see a lot of efficiency talk. That’s useful, but not the whole story. Our monitored output came in roughly 1.8% below the initial PVsyst estimate after eight months, which is within tolerance. The more practical lessons were on the paperwork: check the packing slips against the pallet labels, photograph the shrink wrap before cutting it, and read the warranty exclusions.
Everything I’d read about Tier 1 modules said they’re basically the same. My experience with these delivery counts says otherwise—not because the modules differ, but because packaging, claim handling, and lead times are part of the product. Before ordering, I also checked the module certificates—IEC 61215 and UL 61730—on Jinko’s site. That matters more than any rating chart.
The LiFePO4 12V 80Ah Battery Pack Is Not a Powerwall
The client asked if we could save money by using a LiFePO4 12V 80Ah battery pack instead of a whole-home battery. I’m familiar with the chemistry; I also know the limit.
Here’s the math: 12.8 volts x 80 Ah = 1,024 Wh. At 80% depth of discharge to protect cycle life, that’s about 0.8 kWh usable. Our critical loads—router, modem, two security cameras, a few LED lights—came to about 65 watts. That works out to roughly 12.6 hours of backup. Good for keeping the internet alive. Useless for a refrigerator, a heat pump, or an EV charger.
We found a U.S. stock battery at $229 including shipping in January 2025; another quote was $264. Prices change, so verify current numbers. The price point is why people assume this battery could replace a Powerwall. It can’t, unless the whole backup goal is 0.8 kWh.
After we placed the order, I kept second-guessing. What if 80 Ah was too small for an overnight outage? Two weeks later, we bench-tested it with the actual load, and the state of charge stayed above 40% after a simulated night. That was the moment the decision stopped feeling risky.
Can Any Electrician Install a Tesla Powerwall? No
Here’s the thing: a licensed electrician can hang the Powerwall, wire the circuits, and pull a permit. That doesn’t mean Tesla will let the system stay on.
Our master electrician put it in one sentence:
“I can install it. Whether Tesla will let us turn it on is another question.”
In the U.S., Powerwall commissioning is tied to Tesla’s certified installer network. Tesla’s Powerwall documentation, which I checked in January 2025, ties commissioning to that certified installer network. If the person who activates the system doesn’t have Tesla credentials, the system can’t be commissioned, and the warranty path gets messy.
One December 2024 quote we saw separated certified commissioning as a line item: $1,850. That’s not Tesla’s fee; it was the certified installer’s labor. It’s also a hidden cost you won’t see if you assume battery storage is just wiring. None of this makes Powerwall a bad product. It means the installation path is part of the total price.
So, can any electrician install a Tesla Powerwall? In theory, partially. In practice, no, unless that electrician is also on Tesla’s certified list.
To Install an EV Charger, Plan the Load, Not the Charger
The “install EV charger” part was simpler than the storage debate. We received three quotes for a 32A Level 2 charger:
- Quote one: $1,350. No permit, no load-management relay, no mention that the existing 100A panel was near its calculated limit.
- Quote two: $1,800. Included permit, 40A circuit, a load-management relay, an EV charger that supports solar-surplus mode, and a CT clamp.
- Quote three: $3,200. Included a new 100A subpanel that wasn’t needed, plus expedited scheduling.
Quote one looked like the best deal. It wasn’t. Once we added the missing items, it became $2,350. The middle quote was the one we used. That’s the pattern I see in every procurement review I write: the quote that lists everything upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end.
Can any electrician install an EV charger? Yes, if they can do a load calculation and the local authority accepts their license. NEC Article 625 covers the dedicated branch circuit requirements, and local amendments can change the details. The charger is standard electrical work. The harder part is making it work with the solar system.
The solar side used jinko-solar modules, but the charger didn’t care what brand the panels were. It cared about the inverter settings and the CT clamp. At night, the charger pulls from the grid or battery, not directly from the panels. If someone tells you a grid-tied solar array can directly power an EV charger without the right hardware, ask to see the wiring diagram.
What Our Cost Log Still Says
We didn’t install a Tesla Powerwall. The customer’s load didn’t justify the cost or the commissioning headache. Instead, we installed JinkoSolar panels, a hybrid inverter, and a LiFePO4 12V 80Ah battery pack for critical loads. The EV charger got its own circuit and a CT clamp.
If I sum up the lessons:
- Ask what’s NOT included before you ask the price.
- Review Jinko solar panels with a packing list, not a marketing brochure.
- Match the battery to the load, not to the price.
- When a search phrase like “Edward Horton Jinko Solar” appears out of nowhere, treat it as a question, not an answer.
One honest footnote: this is my sample—1,128 modules, three electrical quotes, one small battery. If you’re building utility-scale plants or buying Powerwalls in volume, your math will differ. That’s fine. This isn’t universal advice; it’s a cost log.
