Small orders aren't the stepping stone to a real solar business. They are the real solar business.
That's not a motivational poster. It's the conclusion I reached after seven years in this industry, and it cost me about $11,000 in avoidable mistakes to learn. If you're researching how to start a solar panel business, this is the honest version you won't get from a supplier webinar.
My background, briefly: I've handled solar equipment orders since 2018—first as a solo installer, now running a small distribution and installation team. I've personally made and documented 14 significant mistakes, and I now maintain the checklist my team runs on every job. Every item on that list comes from a moment I'd rather not repeat. Almost all of those moments happened on small residential orders.
The half-meter mistake: Jinko solar panel dimensions
Spring 2021. A 12-panel residential installation on a clay-tile roof with a tight usable slope. The homeowner wanted maximum power in a compact space, so I recommended Jinko solar panels—specifically, their 550W 72-cell modules. The order arrived on schedule. Second lesson: guessing the storage instead of calculating it.
July 2022. A rural homeowner asked for a backup system during grid outages. His exact words: "fridge and a few lights." I quoted a 5kWh lithium solar battery solution. Simple, right?
I missed the borehole pump.
Not an exotic pump. Just a standard 1hp water pump the house relied on daily. It runs at around 750W, but the startup surge is two to three times that—roughly 2.2kW. My 5kWh battery's BMS couldn't sustain that burst. The first time the pump kicked in, the system shut down completely. The homeowner lost water, which—it turns out—is a much bigger deal than losing the lights.
The fix was a 10kWh unit, installed at a 35% discount because I'd caused the problem. Total damage beyond the original quote: about $1,400, plus a client relationship that took a year to repair.
I now do what I call an "appliance audit" before any storage quote. A solar battery solution is not a number you pull from a sales table. You size it based on continuous draw, startup surge, and the number of hours your client actually needs to run. You ask about the pump. You ask about the workshop tools. You ask about the thing they forgot to mention, because they assume you already know.
That level of thoroughness feels tedious on a small order. It's also exactly why that client recommended me to three neighboring properties within the year.
Why a 2000W car inverter is not a solar inverter
Third lesson: know where the product category ends.
Early in my business, a customer asked if he could use a 2000w power inverter for car to run power tools in his off-grid workshop. You know the type—clips onto a 12V battery, plug in a drill, done. I almost said "should work fine," because it says "inverter" on the box and it outputs alternating current.
Lucky for me, I checked the manual before answering.
The problem isn't the wattage. It's the waveform. Many car inverters output modified sine wave, not pure sine wave. Motors, compressors, and electronic tools can run hotter, louder, or simply refuse to start. And there's the current problem: a 2000W continuous inverter at 12V pulls about 185 amps. Your car's lighter socket is usually fused at 10 or 15 amps. You can't run a real 2000W load through a cigarette lighter, no matter what the package says.
The question everyone asks is "what's the wattage?" The question they should ask is "what's the continuous wattage, and is it pure sine wave?"
A car inverter assumes its battery is being recharged by a running alternator. It doesn't manage solar input. It doesn't talk to a lithium battery BMS. It doesn't switch between grid and battery. If you sell that as an off-grid solar solution, you've created a customer who loses power on day one.

The $190 order that became a $46,000 project
Last argument, and the one I care about most: small customers grow into large ones.
I have a rule that I never turn down a legitimate small order—not because it's noble, but because it's good business. In fall 2019, a customer bought a single Jinko panel from me for a campervan. The total was $190; my margin was about $40. If I'd had a minimum order value—and believe me, I thought about implementing one—that customer would have been told to shop elsewhere.
Five years later—well, four and a half: the retail building contract landed in early 2024—that same customer needed a 48-panel system with a solar battery solution and grid backup. The contract was worth $46,000. When I asked why he came back to a small distributor instead of a national installer, his answer was: "You're the only solar contact who treated a one-panel order like it mattered."
The vendors who took my small orders seriously when I was starting out are the vendors I still use today. The customers you help when they're small are the customers who carry you when you're not.
But isn't small-order work inefficient?
Let's address the obvious objection. Small residential orders have rough economics: the paperwork is similar, the margin is smaller, and the homeowner is more demanding than a procurement department. At face value, the math doesn't love it.
But that math misses the other three columns.
First, cash flow. A 1MW project can stretch 18 months from first bid to final payment. A residential order pays in days. I've watched solar businesses die waiting for one big check. Small orders keep the lights on while the big fish slowly swims toward you.
Second, the rules. The laws around performance claims apply at every scale. The FTC requires that any claim you make to a customer—"this system will eliminate your bill"—be substantiated (you can read the guidance at ftc.gov/business-guidance). Per the FTC Green Guides, environmental claims like "your carbon footprint is canceled" need substantiation too. Learning how to write honest, documented performance estimates on a 12-panel job is the cheapest scalability training that exists. Big projects just multiply your habits, good or bad.
Third, the failure math. A dimension mistake that cost $1,180 on a small roof, repeated on a 200kW commercial project, becomes a $40,000 mistake. Small orders aren't where you lose the most money. They're where you lose the least money while learning the same lesson. At least, that's been my experience across the 170-or-so residential and light-commercial projects we've done since 2018.
Take the small job. It's the real job.

Audit the appliances before you quote a solar battery solution. Ask what kind of waveform your inverter delivers. Treat a one-panel customer like they're your biggest account, because they might become one.
